Ziplings — Merge & Unzip: Cozy drop-merge puzzle with a twist

An offline-first, single-player cozy mobile drop-merge puzzle for iOS & Android — Drop round fuzzy creatures, merge through 11 tiers from cute to cursed, and tap the zipper to unzip and clear bin space.

The Challenge

The mobile drop-merge puzzle genre (popularized by Suika Game and fruit-drop variants) suffers from two fundamental limitations:

  1. Accumulated Helplessness: As the stack nears the game-over line, players become entirely passive, with no diegetic mechanic to intervene other than dropping more objects and hoping for luck.
  2. Lack of Original IP & Emotional Arc: Most drop-merge titles rely on inanimate fruits or short-lived meme assets, carrying copyright risks and quick trend decay.

The design challenge was to build a mobile-first, one-handed drop-merge puzzle that introduces a signature secondary action to reverse stack pressure while establishing a 100% original, emotionally engaging character IP.

The Approach

Ziplings — Merge & Unzip redefines the drop-merge loop around four core design pillars:

  • The "Unzip" Secondary Action — A signature mechanic allowing players to split previously merged objects. When a high-tier Cursed creature (Tiers 6–11) fills the bin, players spend earned Charge meter to tap the zipper on the creature's body, bursting it open into 4 cheering Level-1 Fuzzlings to relieve stack pressure.
  • Cute-to-Cursed Evolution Arc — An 11-tier progression curve moving intentionally from pure cute (Fuzzlings, Pufflings, Mochilings in pastel pink #FFB7C5) to quirky cursed forms (Skewlings, Snagglings, Omnizips in soft purple #C9A7E8), maintaining an Apple 4+ / PEGI 3 family-friendly rating.
  • Living Physics & Expressive Creatures — Every Zipling blinks, breathes, and trembles as the stack grows high. Squash-and-stretch physics create a satisfying, clip-friendly experience tailored for social platforms.
  • Offline-First & Calm Design Ethics — Zero required account sign-ups, no mid-game forced ad popups. All high scores are stored locally, and network calls fail silently without interrupting gameplay.

Core Features

One-Handed Drop-Merge Loop

Smooth drag-and-drop mechanics optimized for portrait gameplay. Matching identical tiers automatically triggers a merge at the contact point accompanied by cute squeak audio effects.

Diegetic Zipper & Charge Economy

No sterile HUD buttons. The zipper affordance sits directly on the body of Cursed creatures. When eligible (Tier ≥6 with ≥1 Charge meter), the zipper glows with a pulsing aura, inviting players to tap and unzip directly.

Reactive & Dynamic Audio

Background music and sound effects respond dynamically to bin height. When stack height exceeds 70% (Panic state), audio transitions into a tense, off-key whisper layer that resolves satisfyingly upon unzipping.

Session Run Snapshot & Warm Resume

Automatic state snapshots preserve active game sessions when the app is backgrounded or when returning to Home, allowing eligible runs to resume for up to 48 hours.

Technical Highlights

  • Flame Engine & PhysicsWorld Abstraction — Gameplay logic is completely decoupled from physics implementation via the PhysicsWorld interface. Production runs Forge2D, while retaining a custom hand-rolled solver as a reference and regression test backend.
  • Data-Driven Balance Configuration — Core balance parameters (creature radii, spawn rates, and Charge economy) are defined in external JSON files (assets/config/), enabling rapid balancing without recompiling engine code.
  • Performance Profiling — Profiled with approximately 50 active bodies on physical iPhone 13 and POCO X8 Pro devices. Entity creation is centralized behind ZiplingFactory, allowing pooling to be introduced if future GC profiling justifies it.
  • Typed Event Bus & State-Driven Audio — Clean event-driven system architecture. Bin overflow alerts (>70%) trigger reactive audio state changes seamlessly.
