The Challenge

Every year, people spend dozens of hours searching for important items right before an urgent moment — passports before heading to the airport, property land deeds before a notary appointment, or spare keys during home emergencies.

Existing home inventory apps suffer from heavy friction: they force users to select categories, attach tags, enter purchase dates, and fill long forms. As a result, most people abandon them after 2–3 uses. Furthermore, items needing tracking are often sensitive personal assets, making users hesitant to upload images to unencrypted third-party clouds.

Design Approach

NookKeep redefines item tracking with four core design principles:

• "Shoot & Forget" Flow (2-Second Loop) — Snap a quick picture, type a single line for location, and save. No mandatory forms or tagging.
• Privacy by Architecture — 100% offline core execution. Images are compressed locally into WebP format (~150KB per image) and stored in an AES-256 encrypted app sandbox. Keys are secured inside iOS Keychain / Android Keystore.
• Calm Vault Visuals — Dark-first visual identity inspired by a quiet digital safe with warm gold accents guiding primary actions.
• User-Owned Cloud Backup (Opt-in) — Anti-data-loss insurance using the user's own Google Drive. Encrypted client-side with a user-chosen passphrase before leaving the device.

2-Second Quick Capture

Minimalist custom camera or system photo library selection. Automatic local WebP compression ensures text remains readable while keeping total app data under 100MB for 500 items.

Instant Fuzzy Search & Offline OCR

Find any item instantly using approximate keyword search on item names, locations, or tags. On-device offline OCR scans document photos so typing "Passport" highlights the exact desk drawer location.

Expiry Reminders

Set local notifications for document expiration dates (passport validity, warranty expiration, prescription medicine shelf-life) without needing any server infrastructure.

App Lock & Privacy Shield

Secure app access with a 6-digit PIN code or Face ID / Touch ID biometric shortcut. Includes a system-level Privacy Shield that hides sensitive app content in the OS app switcher.

Opt-In E2E Encrypted Google Drive Backup

Direct manual backup to the user's personal Google Drive (drive.file scope). Data is encrypted client-side with AES-256 using a passphrase known only to the user.
